Testimonials from our clients

We had a shut off valve replacement done, due to the old one leaking. Elvis came out and was so professional. He wasted no time in getting the job done quickly. Thank you to Ron and Dr.pipe for having these professionals working for you. Great Job!!
Very happy with the work that I done today to fix some issues that were causing a nuisance. Elvis did an amazing job. He was prompt, thorough, kind and explained his process in detail which I appreciate very much as a first time home owner who doesn't know a whole lot about plumbing/home repairs. Would highly recommend and I'm keeping the contact information saved in case of future needs (I hope that won't be the case) Thanks Elvis!
Response from the owner:Thank you so much, Mika, for such a great review. It was a pleasure for us to read it! Thanks for the recommendations as well.
Had a clog in the pipe under my kitchen sink. Elvis was very nice and informative in explaining the situation on what the issue was and how to further prevent it in the future. The service to fix the problem was quick and not a big mess. Highly recommended.
Response from the owner:Thank you for sharing your positive review. Let us know if we can help you. Sincerely, Dr. Pipe.
I am beyond happy with the toilet replacement service done by Elvis! He was very nice, explained everything. It's an old house, so not 100% standard and required some elbow grease. He put in a great effort, not just with the replacement, but cleaning the area, and dealing with some tricky parts. The price was also very fair. I would definitely recommend or call again. Thank you, Elvis!!
Response from the owner:Thank you for the good review. Let us know if you need more plumbing work. Sincerely, Max and Elvis
Elvis was great! He came the same day and fixed everything so quickly. Highly recommend
Response from the owner:Hi Cheryl. Thank you for your business. Always pleasure to work for you. Sincerely, Max and Elvis
Can’t say enough good things about this company. Professional, courteous, and really good at what they do. Most importantly, they do professional work for a reasonable rate, unlike most plumbers in town. Add these guys to your Rolodex and forget the rest.
Response from the owner:Kobra, thank you for sharing your positive review! It's very important for us to read such great words. It was a pleasure to help you. Always yours, Dr. Pipe.
Elvis was great, was very respectful, knew what he was doing, very thorough, even retested twice. He put away things back under the sink that he didn’t move, great plumber and would use again, because of Elvis.
Response from the owner:Thank you, DJ Short, for your kind review! We are here to help you with any plumbing-related issues! Best regards, Dr. Pipe Drain and Plumbing Services.
Elvis did excellent work on what I thought was a sewer drain problem but turned out to be something else. After the first visit, Elvis explained to me in detail his thought process, including drawing diagrams for me on his phone, and gave his recommendations. He then came out for a second visit to install a new toilet and check the drain line, which improved my initial toilet plumbing issue. The work was done carefully, cleanly, and Elvis satisfied my curiosity by answering all my questions while he was doing his work. In the end I feel I can trust these guys to just do work that is required, while keeping my informed, so I understand the what, why, and how. High recommendations from me.
Response from the owner:William Ryu, thank you for your business! Dr. Pipe is really appreciate your review. We were happy to help you. Have a good day!
We were fortunate enough to have the Dream Team of Elvis and Justin come today to tackle our laundry list of issues, which were quickly and efficiently resolved. Elvis remembered us from 2 years ago too! We are very satisfied customers and highly recommend this company–they are great.
Response from the owner:Hi, mtlebay! Thank you for sharing your positive review and desire to recommend us. We are happy to see our clients satisfied. Have a good day!
Elvis was fantastic, trouble shoot leak from main floor bathroom to basement. Helped fixed toilet too and basement sink leak and helped cauked bathroom crack from shower handle to fix leak. Professional and fast, highly recommended!!!
Response from the owner:Hi C T. It’s always a pleasure to help you. We are trying to do the best for our clients. Thank you for your business.

The term “rough-in” refers to a skeleton depicting your plumbing system. It includes the things you can see out in the open as well as pipes and fittings often concealed behind the wall.  Your sinks, toilets, and bathtubs rely on these pipes — seen and unseen — to supply and remove water. When installed the right way, your plumbing system will work reliably. Understanding plumbing rough-ins process will help if there’s an issue.

Rough-in Costs in Toronto and GTA

How much a plumbing rough-in will cost depends on factors like the effort, time, and expertise needed for installation. A professional plumber will put in the work to ensure the pipes and fittings are arranged properly. The entire process will impact the overall expense of the rough-in plumbing. As you might imagine, materials will contribute to the overall cost — especially if copper pipes and fittings are used. Case in point: Buying a 6ft ½” pipe will set you back approximately $11 to $12. Fittings, like couplings, will cost $5 each. The costs can add up quickly. XFR pipes are a more cost-effective option. While not as long-lasting as copper, they offer acceptable durability.

Labour expenses also factor into the total rough-in cost. An experienced plumber could charge $450 to $600 for each plumbing fixture installation. Most plumbing contractors include both labour and material expenses in their quotes.

What to Select: DIY or Professional Rough In?

While many Canadian homeowners like to go the DIY route, plumbing rough-ins in Toronto are best left to the experts. Rough-ins involve proper planning for water supply lines, pipe drains, and more. You need a licensed professional with the right skills, expertise, and problem-solving acumen. Any work done must be inspected by a licensed plumber to ensure the work is in line with building codes and regulations. A licensed plumber you hire for a renovation project knows local building codes. If you make a rough-in project a DIY affair, you will run the risk of costly errors. It’s not worth the risk — especially when a professional will get the job done right.

What Is Included In a Plumbing Rough-In Service?

You may want to know about what exactly constitutes either a new construction plumbing rough-in or a home renovation plumbing rough-in. Look at it this way: pipes for the drain and water supply are run through bored holes in the studs. They must also run through all framing members. It’s also essential to know that pipe constructions are created.

No faucets, sinks, or other things are installed at this phase of the plumbing rough-in process. If a concrete slab foundation must be made for the residence, the plumbing rough-ins should be done before pouring the concrete.

Plumbing Rough-In Process Steps:

1. Homeowner’s Choice: The homeowner chooses where sanitary fixtures like sinks, toilets, and bathtubs will be positioned and informs the plumber.

2. Plumber Marks Locations: The plumber marks the key areas where sanitary fixtures will be installed so that the homeowner’s wishes are respected.

3. Drain Installation: The plumber cuts drainage system pipe holes and puts in the drain pipes first, since they are bigger and less flexible than other components. These pipes are covered so dirt and debris don’t get in during the construction process.

4. Supply Line Installation: The plumber puts in the water supply lines, running them up through the wall or floor to the nearest planned fixture locations. Capped PEX or copper pipes are usually used.

5. Pressure Test: The plumber conducts a pressure test to ensure there are no leaks and that the setup is working as it should.

6. Inspection Appointment: After a successful pressure test, the plumber schedules an appointment with the building inspector. The inspector checks the rough-in for code and safety standard compliance.

7. Approval for Final Steps: If the inspector okays the rough-in, the project can move forward to the final plumbing installation stage. This final stage includes connecting the fixtures and making any finishing touches.

How to Compare Quotes for Rough-in Plumbing in Toronto and the GTA

When sizing up rough-in plumbing quotes, you should focus on the basics. The basics include fittings, drain lines, water supply pipes, glue, primer, and any required ditches for connecting to the outside water supply and sewer. Ensure these services are clearly itemized in the final quote/contract.

Professional plumbers generally see rough-in plumbing as a three-day project, but the timeline can vary based on size and complexity.

Rough-in plumbing in basements for new construction or existing homes might take a single day, while larger homes might require additional time.

Plumbing Rough-In: What to Think About

When doing the plumbing rough-in, wires should be placed in protective outer tubes to safeguard against possible leaks. It’s also a good idea to label junction boxes to isolate wiring if required.

If you’re planning future plumbing expansions, tell your plumber to adapt the rough-in system. They can do this rather inexpensively by adding several extra pipes or vents.

Considering the complexity of rough-in plumbing, you should hire a licensed contractor offering plumbing services and ask for a written warranty. Requesting an inspection is also advised.

FAQs

1. What is rough-in plumbing in new construction and renovations?
Rough-in plumbing is a crucial step in both new construction and renovation projects. It involves installing all the necessary water supply, drain, waste, and vent lines before the walls, floors, and finishes are added. This phase creates the hidden framework of your plumbing system, which allows the installation of fixtures like toilets, sinks, tubs, and showers at a later stage. Proper rough-in plumbing ensures that everything is in place to function smoothly once your finishes are complete.
2. Why is professional rough-in plumbing important for my project?
Proper rough-in plumbing is essential because it sets the foundation for the entire plumbing system in your home or building. Licensed plumbers ensure that pipes are correctly sized, positioned, and sloped in accordance with plumbing codes and your specific building plans. Doing it correctly from the start prevents issues like leaks, poor drainage, or low water pressure later on, saving you from costly rework once walls and floors are closed up.
3. When is rough-in plumbing done during a renovation or new build?
Rough-in plumbing is typically completed after framing is finished but before insulation and drywall. Getting this stage right and inspected on time keeps your Toronto renovation or new construction project on schedule.
4. What does your rough-in plumbing service include?
Our rough-in service includes laying out and installing main water lines, drain and vent stacks, and pipe stub-outs for all plumbing fixtures and appliances. We also check pipe slope, pressure, and layout to make sure everything will work properly once the fixtures are installed.
5. Does rough-in plumbing include installing fixtures like toilets and sinks?
No. Rough-in plumbing covers the “behind the wall” work only. Fixture installation, trim, and final hook-ups are completed later during the finish plumbing phase, after walls, tile, and flooring are in place.
6. How long does rough-in plumbing usually take in a house?
Rough-in plumbing is typically completed within a few days for most residential homes, depending on the number of bathrooms, kitchens, and fixtures involved. For larger or more complex homes, such as custom builds or commercial projects, the process may take longer due to the increased plumbing requirements. However, once the rough-in is completed, it ensures the project moves forward smoothly and on schedule.
7. Do I need permits and inspections for rough-in plumbing in Toronto?
Yes. Rough-in work must meet local plumbing and building codes and usually requires permits and an inspection before you can close the walls. Our licensed plumbers handle the code requirements and coordinate inspections so your rough-in passes and your project can move forward smoothly.
