Some common plumbing emergencies can be taken care of if you have the basic knowledge of the workings of the plumbing system. So, do not panic. If there is a chance that your place might be flooded then shut off the main water valve to avoid such a situation. As a responsible homeowner, you should know where the main water valve is located as shutting it off can greatly reduce the damage.

Leaks

A leaking or broken pipe is one of the most common plumbing emergencies and should be immediately taken care of.  Leaks can develop in the pipes due to rusting and change in the acidity level of the water. If a pipe is leaking, then turn off the heater as well as the main valve to avoid any accident.  In case a pipe has broken, you must shut off the main valve and open all the taps to drain the trapped water. Call Dr.Pipe plumber to replace the broken pipe before opening the water valve.

Clogged Toilets and Drains

Toilets and drains tend to clog due to the accumulation of non-biodegradable materials over time. Hair and soap residue often clog the shower drains if they are not kept covered with a strainer. Grease or food items can also clog the drains. Clogged toilets and drains can be easily cleaned using a plunger or a mixture of vinegar and baking powder. Plunger unclogs the drains by producing suction when it is moved up and down continuously. It can be used for unclogging sinks as well as toilets. Mixture of vinegar and baking powder has proved effective in cleaning sink drains as it is not as corrosive as acid cleaners. The mixture is washed down with boiling water to unclog the drain completely. This method can be used for regular cleaning as well.

Overflowing Toilets

An overflowing toilet is a very common plumbing emergency and it can be resolved by making a few adjustments. If the toilet is overflowing, then open the tank and adjust the float arm. Flush the toilet to check if it is functioning properly. If it is still overflowing, you will be required to replace all the parts of the tank.

If you are facing any common plumbing emergency then you should call the plumber first as professionals are always better equipped. The problem can be temporarily solved by some immediate action on your part, but for a long-term solution you would definitely require professional help. If you feel that the plumbing system of your house is not functioning properly, get it examined rather than waiting until the place is flooded!
